St. Mary’s School - Johnson City, TN
Over the past school year, the students and staff at St. Mary’s School have been very busy building peace. There are many ways the staff engages and motivates each other and the children, and they have generously agreed to share them with us, because they are PeaceBuilders who Help Others.

One motivational thing the staff does is to share Peace Bears. They have two Peace Bears that were originally awarded to staff members for outstanding efforts toward building peace.

Now, each week at their faculty meetings, the bears are presented to two other staff members by the current bear keepers in recognition of their PeaceBuilding efforts.
Mrs. Michelle Morgan, a resource teacher, proudly holds the Peace Bear she was awarded.
1st and 2nd grade teacher’s aide, Mrs. Karin Miller, hugs the Peace Bear presented to her.
The staff loves the ceremony and the acknowledgment, and the children love the idea of having a Peace Bear in their classroom. They share in the staff’s activity through their excitement to see which adult gets the recognition next! The staff at St. Mary’s finds that they’re all putting extra efforts into building peace.

Peace Bears are a weekly PeaceBuilding event at St. Mary’s. They also, however, engage in annual events to strengthen their culture of peace. In September, on International Peace Day, the entire site participated in activities to build peace. They read poems, sang songs and heard stories with a theme of peace. This year, everyone on site was also involved in an inspirational group activity.
They met at the front of the school, and together they formed a human peace symbol.
As this symbolic gesture demonstrates, St. Mary’s does a wonderful job finding ways to involve the entire site in PeaceBuilding activities. In this way, they build peace by creating a sense of unity and cooperation.

They also incorporated PeaceBuilders into their school-wide Halloween celebration. All the children and staff were asked to dress as PeaceBuilders.
Religion teacher, Mrs. Tamila Combs, and 3rd grader, Dominick Haynes, display signs of peace in their Halloween costumes.
At St. Mary’s, building peace is part of their daily lessons and part of their annual celebrations. We are inspired by the imaginative ways they find to make PeaceBuilding relevant and exciting. We praise their ongoing efforts to build and maintain an extraordinarily peaceful environment.
