Diamond Valley School - Markleeville, CA
Diamond Valley School is a site that practices PeaceBuilders with a passion that makes us proud! This k-8 school is finding powerful ways to recognize and reward young people for their PeaceBuilding behaviors and actions.

Students are coached and encouraged to be PeaceBuilders leaders through two leadership teams: one for kindergarten through fourth grade students, and one for fifth through eighth grade students.
This PeaceBoard includes names and photos of the kindergarten through fourth grade after school Junior Leadership Team along with the pledge, the PeaceBuilders Principles and a space for PraiseNotes.
This PeaceBoard, used for the fifth through eighth grade Leadership Team, includes the PeaceBuilders Principles, the students’ own “One Minute Recipes for Peace” and some teacher profiles.
“One Minute Recipes for Peace” are simple actions we can do in less than a minute that will help build peace. This “recipe” on the fifth through eighth grade PeaceBoard has some great ideas!
More good ideas for easy things we can do that will increase peace are listed on this card.
These “recipes” help students realize that we all have an affect on other people in our environment. We can choose to interact positively in order to build peace, and it only takes a minute!
Teachers at Diamond Valley are creating profiles to help the young people get to know them better and to view them as Wise People they can turn to for help and advice. A couple teachers have hung their profiles on the PeaceBoard. More profiles will be displayed in the near future.
When adults let young people know about their hobbies, dreams and aspirations, as these profiles do, it helps the young people find adults with whom they connect. This makes them more likely to seek a wise person when they need one.
Along with the PeaceBoards, Diamond Valley teachers randomly select a PraiseNote each week and the student to whom it belongs gets a set of free movie tickets as a reward. This incentive has students working hard to build peace!

Students who receive the most PraiseNotes in a month also get rewarded at Diamond Valley. They are honored guests at a monthly breakfast, which their parents are invited to attend. The recipients of this monthly award also receive a $10 gift card donated by Target, and they get to participate in a special end of the year field trip.

These kinds of incentives get children interested in PeaceBuilding, which then becomes a way of life for them. It’s a great investment in the future.

The staff and parents at Diamond Valley deserve special praise for finding a PeaceBuilders solution to increasing incidents of middle school bullying by girls. They have established a lunch time “round table.” Girls can volunteer to attend this lunchtime session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week, or they can be selected to attend by their parents. During the round table, they work out their problems and build friendships with the help of an adult advisor.

PeaceBuilders is quickly becoming the way of life at Diamond Valley where the adults role-model the Principles and coach their young people to make peaceful choices. We can hardly wait to discover the wonderful PeaceBuilders ideas and activities they implement next year!
