Ocean Air Elementary - Del Mar, CA
The doors to Ocean Air Elementary School opened to students for the very first time on August 27th. While the school is brand new, almost all the people who will work and learn there are veteran PeaceBuilders who’ve come from other schools in the Del Mar Union School District. They celebrated opening day with a site-wide assembly to welcome students and staff and to provide expectations.

The principal at Ocean Air, Gary Wilson, hosted the assembly, and true to his well-deserved PeaceBuilding reputation, placed a strong emphasis on the PeaceBuilders Principles when talking about school rules and behavior expectations. Staff and students at Ocean Air understand that building peace is not only a priority but a serious responsibility and commitment.

Never let it be said, though, that Gary Wilson is all work and no play. An assembly would not be complete without a musical number from “the singing principal.” To bring the assembly to a peaceful close, Mr. Wilson sang “I am a PeaceBuilder” a beautiful song written by Ms. Jodi Neilson.

After singing the song twice through to familiarize students and staff with the tune and lyrics, Mr. Wilson gave a brief lesson on music styles and captivated the crowd by singing the song in various ways. We heard “I am a PeaceBuilder” as Elvis would have sang it, and we heard an impressive operatic version. The mesmerized crowd laughed and sang along!

We praise Jodi Neilson for her inspirational PeaceBuilders song (lyrics below). We praise Gary Wilson for his consistent modeling of the PeaceBuilders Principles and for expecting his staff and his students to follow his lead. When our expectations are clear and our motivation strong, building peace is as easy as singing a song!
I Am a PeaceBuilder
Jodi Neilson, Ocean Air School

I am a PeaceBuilder at home and school.
I like how I feel ‘cause it’s really cool.
I build peace in my community every day.
Spread the word, let’s make peace that will stay.

I pledge to (nod) praise people (clap, clap), give up put-downs,
seek wise people and notice hurts.
I will right my wrongs and be helpful to you.
Why don’t you be a PeaceBuilder too?

I am a PeaceBuilder at home and school.
I like how I feel ‘cause it’s really cool.
I build peace in my community every day.
Spread the word, let’s make peace that will stay.
Spread the word, let’s make peace that will stay.
Spread the word…let’s make peace that will…stay.
