Riverview Elementary - Lakeside, CA
Riverview Elementary School, because of its strong and lasting dedication to peace, has been featured on our website numerous times. The principal, Larry Skeels, is one of those inspirational people who personifies the PeaceBuilders program; and because of his peaceful approach to life and leadership, the staff and students at Riverview have impressed and inspired us time and time again.

At Riverview Elementary School, PeaceBuilding does not begin and end with the school day, however. The director of the Extended Student Services program (ESS), Carmen Holt, ensures that peace is the primary focus before and after school as well. Ms. Holt says. “Everything we do stems from building peace.” Her mission is to spread peace into the community and out to the world.

As part of their community outreach, the children at Riverview ESS have built a relationship with seniors at the local retirement home. They invited the seniors to visit the school and get to know the children.

The children are also involved with the Lakeside Women’s Club. Last year they created Valentines Day cards for the club members.

To show their commitment to the school, the ESS program also donated Riverview Elementary’s PeaceTree: a beautiful jacaranda that graces the front of the school.

These children, under Ms. Holt’s guidance, are building peace everyday in ways that are noticeable, and beautiful, and meaningful.

At the recent district Festival of the Arts, Riverview’s ESS program submitted a piece of art that stood out from all the rest.
“Peace on Earth” was created by Ms. Holt and all the children in her care. Each child made a cut out to represent him or herself. The children stand together, holding hands, showing that they are working together to create a more peaceful world.
At Riverview and in Ms. Holt’s extended care classes, PeaceBuilding is a way of life. It is more than a program they practice; it is a lifestyle they choose. Their school work, their artwork, and their daily behavior show their commitment. It is a privilege to share their ideas and to call them our partners.
