Williams Elementary - Williams, CA
Williams Elementary is a kindergarten through third grade school in its tenth year of PeaceBuilding. Needless to say, PeaceBuilders has become part of the culture of this cheery site. And after so many years of dedicated PeaceBuilding, it is not unusual to hear the language of PeaceBuilders in the homes of the children and out in the community.

To show their spirit and to keep PeaceBuilders fun, this site holds a regular PeaceBuilders ceremony during their Friday Flag Salute on the playground blacktop. The children and teachers love it, and an added benefit is that many parents attend the festivities and join in the fun!
They begin with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the PeaceBuilders Pledge.
On this particular morning the children and adults sang an energetic rendition of “Peaceful Hands, Peaceful Feet.”

After a PeaceBuilders song, children are awarded ribbons for their participation in the “Reading Counts” program.
Children are called up by name in order of the number of points they earn, which is connected to the number of books they read. The points are traded in for new books autographed by Principal Cyndee Engrahm, who says the system works well to get children to read and to enjoy it!
After the Reading Counts awards, they recognize special PeaceBuilders. During the previous week, each teacher has held a class meeting to discuss the peaceful behavior that everyone should look for and practice on the playground. On Thursday, the whole class discusses who will get the award for their group.
During the awards, the teacher and student take their places at the center of the larger group. The teacher calls out the honored student’s name and names the peaceful behavior the child demonstrated.
The festivities end with a PeaceBuilders cheer and they all set off to their individual classrooms, happy and ready to learn.

A regular ceremony to reward children for their efforts is a proven way to generate enthusiasm and to assure young people will repeat the behaviors for which they have been rewarded and acknowledged. We praise the teachers and staff at Williams Elementary for the praise they shower on the children who are growing everyday into PeaceBuilders leaders of the future.
