Sycamore Ridge Elementary School - Del Mar, CA
Involving young people in the busy work of building peace is integral to the success of PeaceBuilders at all our sites. One great way to do this is to establish a team of young people and give them responsibilities that help create a peaceful climate.

At Sycamore Ridge Elementary School, Principal Emily Disney set a goal to empower students at her school by expecting them to be instrumental in efforts to build peace. Although this is only their second year as a PeaceBuilders site, this school has already developed a culture founded on peace; and to help sustain the peace this year, a team of PeaceCoaches has been established.
Meet some of the helpful, wise, energetic, AWESOME Sycamore Ridge PeaceCoaches!
As advisor to the PeaceCoaches, Ms. Carrie Herreria has worked closely with her team to coach them how to build peace during their shifts as PeaceCoaches. These exceptional children know what to look for on the playground: people who deserve praise, people who need help, and people who are in need of a kind act. And they know how to respond: they write PraiseNotes, they help peers resolve small conflicts, they treat everyone kindly, and they notice hurts so they can increase peace.

When they come across children in conflict, they try to help them solve their problem by reminding them to be PeaceBuilders, by soothing hurt feelings, and by offering possible solutions. These wise PeaceCoaches know they should seek a wise adult if their intervention does not seem to be working.

When asked what kinds of hurts they look out for on the playground, they named not only obvious things like helping a hurt child to the nurse’s office, but also less obvious hurts like helping a child who usually spends recess alone find a group to play with. The Sycamore Ridge PeaceCoaches want to make sure everyone feels part of the family.

The most surprising thing about these young PeaceBuilders is their heightened sense of empathy. They take seriously their role as ambassadors of peace. They proactively look for hurts to mend and people to help. They are clever and sincere about finding reasons to praise their peers for their PeaceBuilding behaviors.

These young people are exceptional leaders and we are proud to share their story and their success. We praise them for modeling PeaceBuilders behaviors and for coaching their peers to be the best PeaceBuilders they can be.

We also praise Ms. Disney and Ms. Herreria for helping these young people develop their leadership skills and for empowering them with a true sense of possibility. These skills will benefit them and our global community as they become the leaders of the future!
